APW Inducts Eleven into National Junior Honor Society

The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown chapter of the National Junior Honor Society inducted eleven new members at a special ceremony held on April 12 at the school.

Inductees included: Abigail Bielby, Hannah Matlock, Allisyn Scott, Aida Causevic, Vanessa Dupree, Conner Harrington, Mackenzie Johnson, Michael Kinney, Allison Lenhart, Jordan Ostrander, and Alivia Turk. Participating in the induction ceremony were current members: Anna Mullin, Miranda Hamilton, Kathryn Trumble, Jacob Smith, Ethan Pernisi, Alayna Ruffos, Abagail Skllington-Bice, Amelia Aringer, Sydney Townsend and Amra Causivic. Adviser for the NJHS is DeLaine Trexler.

In a welcome by APW Superintendent of Schools Anita Murphy, she told the audience of family and friends that there were three events that she looks forward to every year and they are National Honor Society, Graduation and the National Junior Honor Society ceremonies.

“Middle School kids are in transition,” she said, “they struggle academically. But, the kids on this stage didn’t do that.” Instead, she noted, they excelled and their induction into the honor society was proof that they not only excelled academically, but also that they exhibit leadership, character, citizenship and service to their community. She went on to say that the students “can do anything they set their hands to.” And charged them to “keep this community whole and safe.”

DeLaine Trexler shared about the history of National Junior Honor Society and the APW chapter, which began in 1992 before the new inductees recited the pledge in a special candle lighting portion of the ceremony. She urged the members to inspire others to follow their lead. She also shared the symbolism of the candle lighting ceremony before current members lighted the candles and shared what each candle signified: knowledge, scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

As their names were called, each new inductee was presented with their NJHS certificate and congratulated by Superintendent Murphy and Michelle Crisafulli, Principal at APW Jr/Sr High School. After the certificates were presented, current members read each new member’s essay on what NJHS means to them.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held for the inductees and their guests.
