New traffic pattern for drop off of students at Elementary Building

A new student drop off loop is available for use by parents at the elementary school.

Completed over the summer, the new traffic pattern was developed to address concerns about student safety when transported to school by parents at the beginning of the school day. Before the new lot was constructed, students and parents were required to cross the bus circle from the parking area during a time of high bus traffic in order to enter the school building.

To address these concerns, APW Elementary Principal Julie Woolson worked with Director of Facilities David Poore and Transportation Supervisor Nathan Metcalf to design the loop which in addition to the drop off lane, also provides additional parking for parents who need to come into the school to sign their child out at the end of the day or during the school day for a particular reason.

In the mornings from 8:30 – 8:50 a.m. staff members will be posted at the circle and side doors near the cafeteria to ensure that students enter the building safely. Students exit the vehicle to a sidewalk which leads right to the cafeteria entrance doors without having to cross any of the driveways at the school. Students may enter at the front cafeteria doors or the side doors near the gymnasium hallway. Monitors are stationed at these locations to assist children as they arrive.

In the event that a parent needs to enter the building during the school day, they may use the parking areas located adjacent to the drop off area and enter the building through the main doors. If parents are picking up their child from school, they may use this parking lot and enter the cafeteria area where they can sign their child out. Parents are asked to wait in the cafeteria until their child arrives in the cafeteria.
If the parent must pick their child up before the end of the day, they are asked to use the main office entrance to sign them out.
The new student drop off loop and parent parking area provides a safe spot where parents can drop their child and they can enter the school without crossing a traffic roadway.
