Youth-led Leadership Conference with Disney Theme

Few could argue with the success that Walt Disney and the Disney franchise has had over the many decades since their founder began what is now a billion dollar multi-media entertainment company. A recent student-led leadership conference used the Disney leadership model in presenting to student leaders from across central New York. Schools from Oswego, Onondaga, Cayuga and Cortland Counties participated in the event hosted by Central Square. Students participated in a multi-faceted conference with guest keynote speaker Andy Thibodeau. Thibodeau’s blend of humor and personally-relatable stories from his own life engaged the students in a motivational program that stressed positivity and attitude.

Students participated in several workshops, led by students on a wide variety of topics including advertising, communicating, goal setting, public speaking and working together to name a few of the many options available for the attendees. The workshops used Disney ideas and successes to illustrate their topics.

In addition, a share and grow session looked at how the student leaders individually viewed the success of their schools and areas where they thought they could improve. In sharing with other students individually or in small groups, they learned about ideas they would like to bring back to their own school.

The group also championed a charitable cause, this year the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. The students wrote letters to their government representatives to encourage support of the organization.

The conference marked the 18th annual student-led leadership conference hosted by students and advisors at Paul V.  Moore High School in Central Square.

Student leaders from school districts in Oswego County included: Central Square’s PVM High School, CS Middle School; Oswego Middle School; Fulton Junior High School; APW Junior and Senior High School; and Sandy Creek Middle and Senior High School.
