Class of 1999
Tell us a little about yourself and where your education took you?
It was all the way back in sixth grade when I decided I would take care of childbearing women. I attended the college at the University of Baylor where I earned a Doctorate Degree in Nursing, majoring in midwifery. I know own a successful midwifery practice in Texas and was honored as the “Best Midwife in Dallas” in 2017.
How did you choose your career?
I remember growing up, I answered the question ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ with the answer ‘a baby doctor.’ I came to learn that the nurse midwifery model was my calling, and I’ve spent more than 20 years after that day working to achieve my goal.
What was your most memorable high school experience?
My most memorable high school experience was being a part of the APW Winter Guard. It is where I learned grit, teamwork, the ability to be coached and the importance of a supportive community.
What APW class/teacher had the biggest impact on you? How so?
The teacher who most directly influenced me was Cathy Goulet, my biology teacher. It was in her class that my fascination and love for human physiology was ignited.
What is your advice for the next generation?
It is important to surround yourself with people who are living the life you want to lead. If you want to be successful, surround yourself with successful people. None of us can achieve our goals without the support of our families, friends and community. I always try to stay open to continued learning and questioning what I think I know. My mantra is “she who knows the most, knows that she knows the least.”
