APW students use virtual reality technology to explore career paths
With the help of modern technology and the use of virtual reality headsets, business students at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown JSHS were able to explore dozens of career opportunities without leaving their classroom.
Business teacher Amy DeJohn partnered with the Oswego County Workforce Career Center to bring their VR Career Exploration Program to her classroom. “I attended a business conference last year where the VR headsets were introduced,” she said. “I saw the potential for my students to gain insight into various professions while making informed decisions about their futures.”
While wearing the headsets, students became fully immersed in various industries through realistic, hands-on job simulations. They operated heavy machinery, constructed houses, worked in manufacturing, performed complex surgeries and more.
DeJohn aims to build on this program by introducing a virtual reality elective course for the following school year. Her vision is to combine VR headsets with industry conference calls, creating an innovative learning experience that enhances career readiness.
