APW Elementary students connect virtually with children's author Alexis O’Neill
Third grade elementary students at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown had the unique opportunity to virtually connect with children's author, Alexis O’Neill, thanks to a Zoom session that was organized by school librarian Sara Bostick.
O’Neill, originally from Madison County and Syracuse, N.Y., now resides in Ventura County, Calif. She has written seven published books, is currently working on an eighth and has contributed to numerous magazine articles.
During the session, O’Neill’s primary focus was on “The Recess Queen,” a book that took her seven years to write. The story follows a schoolyard bully who is transformed by the kindness of a new student, illustrating the power of friendship and empathy.
O’Neill shared the inspiration behind the book and walked students through the creative process. “I love when I come up with an idea and find ways to make it better and better,” she said. “Revising a story is as much fun as coming up with the idea in the first place.”
Each student was allowed the opportunity to ask a question directly to the author, who generously answered each one. “I love these virtual chats because I get to see your faces, hear your questions and share a love of books together,” she explained.
When asked what they liked about the zoom session, students expressed excitement and inspiration, noting that they gained a deeper appreciation for the effort behind writing a book.
