Snow Days

February 27, 2019
Greetings APW families,
While winter weather continues to be a challenge, we will always act in the interest of safety for our students, our faculty, and our staff. Prior to February break we had exhausted our 5 allotted snow days for the 2018-2019 school year. Our additional snow day on Monday February 25th required us to use a 6th unscheduled day. This will cause the following changes to our school calendar:
• In order to comply with our NYSED 180 day mandate, March 18, 2019 originally scheduled to be a staff development day will now be converted to a full school day for students to report.
• If we are required to use a 7th day, April 22nd will be converted to a full school day for students to report.(Please note that this is only if an additional snow day is used)
There has been some confusion recently based on statements by Governor Cuomo that the February 25th snow day will be forgiven. This is not actually the case as those additional days can only be granted by applying for a waiver and only after scheduled vacation days have been exhausted. When we asked for clarification from NYSED we received the following:
“In cases where a district has fully exhausted all available snow days and scheduled vacation days, the Department has a process by which districts can request a waiver if they are unable to meet the minimum instructional requirements.”
Given that we have not used our April break vacation, we are not eligible to take this day without penalty. We wanted to share this information with you as early as possible so you can plan accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you all for your flexibility as we move into the Spring season and hopefully better weather.
Best regards,
Eric Knuth
