  • Please be advised by the following:

     We have been informed there is a well-organized fraud attempt aimed at businesses and school districts regarding New York State’s unemployment insurance program. The fraudulent activity started in Western New York and has found its way to Central NY.  Two districts in the OCM BOCES region have received written unemployment claims that include an individual’s name, social security number, and home address. The documents appear to be genuine and often contains correct personal information. Currently, the FBI is conducting an investigation as this is occurring in multiple states around the country. The FBI recommends that individuals whose identities are involved in such fraudulent activity notify the New York State Department of Labor. We are being told the perpetrators of this fraud are sophisticated and have gathered their information from outside sources.  There is no indication that there has been a breach in the data housed at the CNYRIC.

     Fraudulent Unemployment Claims

    ASBO has received several questions regarding school district responses to fraudulent unemployment claims filed unbeknownst to victims who have had their identity compromised. Employees impacted by fraudulent unemployment claims should be directed to file a report here. (I inserted the link below) The claimant’s benefits will be placed on hold while a full investigation is conducted. Individuals impacted by unemployment fraud-related identity theft can protect themselves further and order free credit reports by visiting https://www.ftc.gov/
